Skara Brae: A Time-Traveling Delight!
Who knew a 5,000-year-old village could be the highlight of my Orkney trip? Skara Brae is basically a Stone Age time capsule by the sea—complete with Neolithic “mod-cons”! I was blown away by how well-preserved everything is. You can peek into snug stone houses with built-in furniture (yes, a prehistoric IKEA situation) and even an ancient drainage system (indoor toilets in 3000 BC, folks—talk about being flush with innovation!).
The history here is downright fascinating. A wild storm in 1850 revealed this buried village, making Mother Nature the ultimate archaeologist. Now we get to wander through homes older than the pyramids, and it’s honestly mind-boggling. I half-expected Fred Flintstone to swing by for a chat!
Unexpected perk: the place comes with coastal charm. The village sits by a gorgeous beach, so these Neolithic people clearly knew how to pick a prime piece of real estate. Visiting Skara Brae is like stepping into a real-life time machine (no DeLorean needed) and it’s ridiculously fun. Educational? Absolutely. Entertaining? You bet your woolly mammoth socks it is. Five stars, without a doubt!

A really great visit and is a bucket list place for me. It was well staffed with knowledgeable staff and has a small
but informative museum at the main entrance. The site is well kept and has amazing views of the ocean. The cafe however is only open in the summer months.

When I visited it was a very windy, about 40 km/h winds. An employee was measuring the wind speed on the grass. I was standing upwind of her, so I moved so I would not block the measurement. I was verbally reprimanded rather rudely for walking on the grass. Despite she standing on the grass as well. Oh and this was the plot of grass opposite of the ruins.

An amazing prehistoric village and some schools even teach about it. Plus, after you go to Skara Brae, enjoy a nice day at the beach after looking at a site from way before 100BC(Skara Brae was a place where humans from the stone age lived).

It was a dream come true to visit this place
The replica hut, before you go to the main site was outstanding
Walking up to the site were flagstones bearing different events after the birth of Skara Brae village, then the site itself, was just amazing, just to see how and were our ancient ancestors were living, only imagining the hardships they faced, but such remarkable ingenuity of the time, to keep warm, to feed, and to live
